Light Infantry
circa 1853: An officer of the 74th Highlanders (later the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry). Officially formed in 1777 by former Jacobite Lord MacLeod, son of the Earl of Cromarty and a Mackenzie by clan, the regiment was originally called MacLeods Highlanders and wore a kilt in Mackenzie tartan. The regiment became the Light Infantry in 1809 and in 1834 was granted permission to wear tartan trousers and plaids or shawls. Famous Highlanders include Piper George Clark who continued to play his bagpipes for his comrades during a battle despite being badly wounded in the thigh. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an officer of the 74th Highlanders, later known as the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, circa 1853. The regiment's rich history dates back to its formation in 1777 by Lord MacLeod, a former Jacobite and son of the Earl of Cromarty. Originally named MacLeods Highlanders, they proudly donned kilts in Mackenzie tartan. Intriguingly, this renowned regiment transitioned into the Light Infantry in 1809 and was granted permission to wear tartan trousers and plaids or shawls in 1834. This unique blend of traditional Scottish attire with military uniform sets them apart. Among their ranks stood remarkable individuals like Piper George Clark, whose unwavering dedication to his comrades is legendary. Even after sustaining a severe thigh wound during battle, he valiantly continued playing his bagpipes. The vibrant colors captured in this portrait highlight not only the officer's distinguished appearance but also emphasize the army's conspicuous clothing style prevalent during that era. It serves as a testament to both their bravery on the battlefield and their commitment to preserving Scottish heritage within military traditions. This extraordinary image from Hulton Archive offers us a glimpse into history—a visual reminder of those who served with honor and valor under the banner of the Highland Light Infantry.
