Raiding by tribesmen from the Black Mountains of Indias North West Frontier culminated on 18 June 1888 when a British patrol was ambushed and two officers killed. Five columns of the Hazara Field Force under Major-General J. W. McQueen advanced into the rebellious area on 4 October. The Akazais and Hassanzais were brought to heel, and on 13 October the village at Maidan was destroyed. McQueen then moved on to punish the remaining hostile tribes. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brave soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's) during their Black Mountain Expedition in 1888. Taken by an unknown photographer from the 19th century, this image is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The photograph depicts a momentous event in history when tribesmen from the Black Mountains on India's North West Frontier launched a raid that resulted in the tragic deaths of two British officers. In response to this ambush, Major-General J. W. McQueen led five columns of the Hazara Field Force into the rebellious area on October 4th. As part of their mission to restore order and bring justice, McQueen's forces successfully subdued both Akazais and Hassanzais tribes before ultimately destroying Maidan village on October 13th. Undeterred by these victories, McQueen continued his campaign against remaining hostile tribes until operations were concluded on November 14th. This particular photo is one among a collection of 63 photographs compiled by Major-General J McQueen himself as he commanded the Hazara Expedition in 1888. It serves as a powerful visual testament to bravery and resilience exhibited by these soldiers during a challenging time. With its historical significance and remarkable composition, this print offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon past conflicts while honoring those who fought valiantly for peace and stability along India's North West Frontier.
