EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "A Petty Professor of Modern History brought to Light" takes us back to the year 1810 when it was published by Hannah Humphrey. Created by the renowned artist James Gillray, this etching with aquatint measures 40x28 cm and is now under the care of The Warden and Scholars of New College, Oxford. In this satirical cartoon-like depiction, we find ourselves in a lecture hall at Cambridge University. A queue of students eagerly awaits their turn to be enlightened by the professor's teachings on modern history. The lecturer stands at an oval lectern adorned with notes and an ink pot while wearing a traditional academic gown and mortar board. However, it seems that his teaching style may not be as inspiring as one would hope. Some students are seen dozing off or yawning in boredom, while others appear uninterested or even frustrated. The professor himself appears oblivious to his audience's lackluster response as he continues to deliver his tedious seminar. Gillray masterfully captures the essence of uninspiring academia through clever caricature and subtle satire. With rays shining down upon him like a spotlight on stage, our petty professor fails to engage his pupils effectively. This print serves as both a humorous commentary on educational experiences throughout history and a reminder that engaging teaching methods are vital for student success.
