A Border Fair, c.1865 (oil on canvas)

TW427335 A Border Fair, c.1865 (oil on canvas) by Ritchie, John (fl.1858-75); 69x106.5 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: This is thought to be Stagshaw Bank Fair in Northumberland, which took place in summer during the 19th century. In the background, animals are gathered for sale at the fair. The crowd includes a woman selling china from a stall, and a girl having her palm read. Two children are leaving with the toys they have bought. Hexham can be seen in the distance, but the surrounding crags are an imaginary detail created by the artist;); A© Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; English, out of copyright

Fair on the Town Moor, Newcastle, c.1810 (oil on canvas) Featured Circus, fairs, fetes & Carnivals Image

Fair on the Town Moor, Newcastle, c.1810 (oil on canvas)

TW427315 Fair on the Town Moor, Newcastle, c.1810 (oil on canvas) by Wilson, John Glen (Jock) (1774-1855); 78.7x191.3 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: This picture shows that the annual fair on Town Moor in Newcastle was already a large affair in the early 19th century. A huge banner on the right of the scene advertises a travelling theatre. A fashionably dressed young woman in a yellow jacket and white skirt strolls among the people selling fruit and other goods. The animals include a cow, and the fair seems to have been used as an opportunity to trade animals. The name on the signboard above the tent is probably the artist's signature;); A© Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; Scottish, out of copyright
