EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the idyllic charm of Somerset in 1936, as captured by the talented artist Frank Newbould. Commissioned by the Great Western Railway (GWR), this poster aimed to entice travelers to explore the picturesque beauty of Somerset through rail travel. The artwork showcases a serene rural scene that seems straight out of a fairytale. A quaint cottage nestled amidst lush green rolling hills instantly transports us into a world untouched by time. An old stone bridge gracefully arches over a crystal-clear stream, inviting us to cross and discover what lies beyond. Newbould's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his brush. The vibrant trees sway gently in the breeze, casting dappled shadows on the landscape below. Each element harmoniously blends together, creating an atmosphere that exudes tranquility and serenity. Frank Newbould's talent extended far beyond railway posters; he left an indelible mark on various industries with his artistic prowess. Having studied at Bradford College of Art and later joining the War Office, Newbould designed posters for esteemed organizations such as London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), Orient Line, Belgian Railways, and GWR. As we gaze upon this timeless image from National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we can't help but be captivated by its nostalgic allure.
