EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1840s, the great equestrian bronze statue of the Duke of Wellington, astride his legendary steed Copenhagen, is seen at the foundry of its creator, Matthew Cotes Wyatt, at Dudley Grove House in London's Harrow Road. The Duke of Wellington, a British Army field marshal and statesman, was celebrated for his victories against Napoleon Bonaparte and is immortalized in this magnificent sculpture. The statue, which stands over 18 feet tall, was commissioned by King George IV in 1822 and took over a decade to complete. Here, at Wyatt's foundry, the final touches were being made before the monumental work of art was transported to its intended location, Hyde Park Corner, to top the Wellington Arch or Constitution Arch. The arch was built to commemorate the victories of the Duke of Wellington and to mark the entrance to Hyde Park. A carriage is being constructed in the background, which would be used to move the statue from Dudley Grove House to its new home. The Duke of Wellington's statue is now a cherished landmark in Aldershot, Hampshire, where it stands as a testament to the military prowess and leadership of one of Britain's greatest heroes. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the Victorian era, providing a unique perspective on the creation and transportation of a monumental sculpture, which continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
