Maps of the Spanish Armada (16 and 21 July 1588), Two cards (I-II) with the Spanish fleet in the Channel below the coast of Cornwall and Devon, within an ornamental frame. At the top in the frame is a medallion with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, flanked by the personifications of History and Fame, seated between weapons (spears, shields, banners). Under the medallion hangs a cartouche with the Anchor of Hope, the arms of the English Admiralty, surrounded by the four winds. Among them Neptunus pulled in his wagon by two horses and accompanied by two men with fish tails. In the right corner of the left card, Britannia sits with two putti by a rock by the water. One of the two putti looks out over the sea with binoculars. On the right Minerva card and a putti with the Charles Howard coat of arms. This print showcases two beautifully detailed maps of the Spanish Armada, dated 16 and 21 July 1588. Enclosed within an ornamental frame, the maps depict the Spanish fleet sailing along the coast of Cornwall and Devon in the English Channel. Atop the frame sits a medallion featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, accompanied by personifications of History and Fame seated amidst weapons such as spears, shields, and banners. Beneath this regal display hangs a cartouche adorned with the Anchor of Hope and the arms of the English Admiralty, surrounded by depictions of Neptunus being pulled in his wagon by two horses. Two men with fish tails accompany him on this mythical journey. On one side of these magnificent cards, Britannia is seen sitting alongside two putti near a rocky shoreline overlooking the sea through binoculars. The other card features Minerva alongside another putto displaying Charles Howard's coat of arms. This extraordinary print is part of a book dedicated to recounting tales from The Spanish Armada era while also showcasing carpets created for it by Howard himself. With its intricate details capturing naval battles, national symbols, mythological figures like Neptune and Minerva, as well as elements like armorial bearings and heraldry - this print offers viewers an immersive glimpse into history. Preserved since June 24th, 1739 in London by John Pine on paper using etching techniques; it measures approximately 192mm x 239mm (left card) and 181mm x 238mm (right card), while its overall dimensions are about h380 mm x w618 mm.
