Races at Wheat Croft - Col. Thompsons "Hamlet"winning the Lascelles Cup, 1845
Races at Wheat Croft - Col. Thompsons " Hamlet" winning the Lascelles Cup, 1845....Horse-races, in Wheat Croft, a piece of land well adapted for a course, on the south side of the river Wharfe, and very near to Harewood-bridge [at Harewood near Leeds in Yorkshire]...The prizes were all the gift of the Earl of Harewood, and were contended for by his tenants only; except " The Lascelles Cup, " which was subscribed for by several of the nobility and gentry of the neighbourhood, who were also the competitors for the prize: it is of the value of about Eighty Guineas. The course staked off for the races was nearly in the form of a circle, and about a mile in circumference; and the rest of the field afforded ample room for the spectators. Races at Wheat Croft - Col. Thompson's 'Hamlet' Winning the Lascelles Cup, 1845
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous horse-racing event that took place in Wheat Croft, near Leeds in Yorkshire, back in 1845. The races were held on a piece of land perfectly suited for the course, situated on the south side of the picturesque river Wharfe and close to Harewood-bridge. The prizes offered during these races were generously provided by none other than the Earl of Harewood himself. While most awards were exclusively contested among his tenants, one prestigious prize stood out from the rest – "The Lascelles Cup". This coveted trophy was subscribed for by numerous nobility and gentry from the surrounding area who also participated as competitors. Valued at around Eighty Guineas, it symbolized both prestige and excellence. The racecourse itself was meticulously staked off into a circular shape with a circumference spanning approximately one mile. The remaining field served as ample space for enthusiastic spectators to witness this thrilling spectacle unfold before their eyes. Preserved within this historic engraving from "Illustrated London News" we catch a glimpse of an era long gone but not forgotten – where jockeys skillfully guided their magnificent horses towards victory amidst cheers from an eager crowd. It is truly remarkable how this image encapsulates both tradition and excitement that continues to captivate our imagination even after all these years.
