5929086 Thirteenth Light Dragoons
(aquatint, coloured) by Heath, William (1795-1840) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Thirteenth Light Dragoons.
Coloured aquatint by and after William Heath, published by J Watson, Vere Street, Bond Street, London, 15 Aug 1820. From an album of 18 aquatints entitled Military Costume of the British Cavalry, 1820.
Dragoons were originally mounted soldiers primarily intended to fight on foot, but by the late 18th century most dragoon regiments had evolved into conventional heavy cavalry units. Others, including the 13th, become light dragoon regiments. The 13th fought the forces of Napoleonic France at Albuera (1811), Vitoria (1813) and Waterloo (1815).); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Thirteenth Light Dragoons, a renowned cavalry unit from the early 19th century. Created by William Heath and published in London in 1820, this aquatint is part of an album titled "Military Costume of the British Cavalry". The vivid colors bring to life the uniforms and regalia of these brave soldiers. Originally established as mounted infantry, dragoon regiments like the Thirteenth gradually transformed into heavy cavalry units during the late 18th century. However, some regiments, including the Thirteenth Light Dragoons, retained their light cavalry status. The Thirteenth played a significant role in several major battles against Napoleon's forces. They fought valiantly at Albuera in 1811, Vitoria in 1813, and famously participated in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. This historic print offers us a glimpse into an era when horse-mounted troops were essential for military operations. The attention to detail captures not only their distinctive uniforms but also their unwavering determination on horseback. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, this artwork serves as a testament to both British military history and artistic excellence. It reminds us of the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by these dragoons who dedicated themselves to defending their country with honor and valor.
