When news of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) reached Britain, Prime Minister Lord Palmerston offered Campbell the post of Commander-in-Chief in India. The son of a Glasgow carpenter, CampbellAs rise to high command was slow, despite his fine career in the Napoleonic Wars. His command of the Highland Brigade during the Crimean War brought him to public attention and finally made his reputation. He accepted PalmerstonAs offer and left the following day, arriving in Calcutta in August 1857. After organising his army and clearing Lower Bengal of rebels, Campbell brought about the second relief of Lucknow in November 1857. He returned to Lucknow the following March and captured the city. That year Campbell was raised to the peerage. On his return to Britain he was promoted to Field Marshal.); eNational Army Museum; British, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print depicts Lieut Gen Sir Colin Campbell, G. C. B. , a distinguished military figure from the 19th century. The image is a line engraving created by T. W. Hunt based on a photograph taken by John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall. Published in 1856, this artwork captures the essence of Campbell's commanding presence and his significant role during the Indian Mutiny. Campbell's journey to becoming Commander-in-Chief in India was not an easy one. Born into humble beginnings as the son of a Glasgow carpenter, he gradually rose through the ranks due to his exceptional skills displayed during the Napoleonic Wars. However, it was his command of the Highland Brigade during the Crimean War that truly brought him recognition and solidified his reputation. When news of the Indian Mutiny reached Britain, Prime Minister Lord Palmerston appointed Campbell to lead British forces in India. Without hesitation, Campbell accepted and swiftly departed for Calcutta in August 1857. He quickly organized his army and successfully cleared Lower Bengal of rebels before achieving two crucial victories -the second relief of Lucknow in November 1857 and capturing Lucknow itself in March 1858. For his remarkable achievements, Campbell was elevated to peerage that same year upon returning to Britain. His military prowess did not go unnoticed either; he received a promotion to Field Marshal. This print serves as both a tribute to Sir Colin Campbell's accomplishments and an enduring reminder of his pivotal role during one of India's most challenging periods in history.
