King Carol visits Polish cathedral after all. Through a new door. Despite the opposition

King Carol visits Polish cathedral after all.
Through a new door.
Despite the opposition of Cardinal Sapieha, the Archbishop of KrakAow, King Carol of Romania and Crown Prince Michael, inspected Wawel Cathedral during their visit to Poland, and also pay tribute in the crypt, where lies the coffin of Marshal Pilsudski. Cardinal Sapieha was not present during the Royal visit as he is stated to be seriously ill.
Seemingly objecting to King Carols morals, Cardinal Sapieha came into conflict with the Polish government when he temporarily removed Pilsudskis coughing from its resting place and part the Cathedral to King Carol. A new door was specially cut for the King.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photo print, taken on July 5,1937, we witness the controversial visit of King Carol of Romania and Crown Prince Michael to Wawel Cathedral in Poland. Despite facing opposition from Cardinal Sapieha, the Archbishop of Krakow, who was absent due to illness, King Carol and his son decided to explore the cathedral and pay their respects in the crypt where Marshal Pilsudski's coffin lay. The tension between Cardinal Sapieha and the Polish government escalated when he temporarily removed Pilsudski's resting place to accommodate King Carol's visit. To facilitate this unprecedented event, a new door was specially cut for the occasion. Captured in black and white monochrome tones by TopFoto. co. uk, this photograph showcases King Carol on the right and Crown Prince Michael at the center inside Wawel Cathedral. It serves as a testament to an era marked by political conflicts and moral disagreements. This image encapsulates a significant moment in European history between two world wars. Its presence within Europeana Photography highlights its cultural importance as a piece of press photography captured by Planet News during that time period.
