EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the poignant story of Ottillie Zwink, a widow who was chosen to play the role of Virgin Mary in the Oberammergau Passion Play. The image showcases her solemn yet determined expression as she prepares for this significant role, which holds deep personal meaning for her. The Committee of the Oberammergau Passion Play made a compassionate decision to offer Ottilie the opportunity to act as an understudy to the new Mary, allowing her to channel her grief into this powerful performance. With the season lasting 20 weeks, it is highly likely that audiences will witness Ottilie's return to her familiar part on stage. Taken on April 13th, 1922, this monochrome portrait reveals not only Ottilie's resilience but also highlights her strength as a woman facing adversity during a time when societal expectations were different. Her portrayal of Mary symbolizes hope and faith amidst personal tragedy. Preserved by Central News and now available through Europeana Photography archives, this photograph serves as a testament to both Ottilie's individual journey and the enduring power of art in healing hearts. It reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we can find solace and purpose through self-expression and community support.
