EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1966, we are introduced to Dorothy Boulter, a remarkable woman who played an integral role at Swindon Works. Pictured here in June of that year, Dorothy served as the secretary to the Chief Carriage and Wagon Works Draughtsman. Dorothy's journey with the Great Western Railway (GWR) began in 1935 when she joined as a clerk based in the Accounts Office. However, her passion for creativity and dedication led her to transition into the Drawing Office at the onset of World War II. This photograph captures Dorothy's poise and professionalism as she stands amidst a bustling workplace. Her presence exudes confidence and competence, reflecting her years of experience within GWR. As one gazes upon this image, it is evident that Dorothy was not only an essential cog in the machinery of Swindon Works but also a trailblazer for women working in traditionally male-dominated fields during that era.
