White matter fibres of the human brain C014 / 5672
White matter fibres. Coloured 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres in the human brain. Coloured using 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan, it reveals the bundles of nerve fibres that transmit crucial signals between different regions of the brain and also to the spinal cord. By employing a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), known as DSI, this image effectively maps out the criss-crossing patterns formed by these vital neuron fibers. The technique used here is similar to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which is widely utilized for exploring neural data related to white matter fibres within our brains. Both methods enable researchers to not only map their orientations but also understand how various brain regions are interconnected through these pathways. Thanks to advancements in technology and data/software provided by NIH Human Connectome Project, we can now delve deeper into unraveling the complexities of our nervous system. This remarkable visual representation serves as a testament to our growing understanding of how information flows within our brains and highlights the significance of studying white matter fibre tracking. With its scientific yet artistic appeal, this print offers a glimpse into one aspect of human cognition that continues to fascinate researchers worldwide. It reminds us just how intricately woven our brains truly are and ignites curiosity about what other mysteries lie hidden within this extraordinary organ.
