Nordlinger Ries impact crater, artwork C016 / 6316

Nordlinger Ries impact crater. Artwork of the lake that formed in the Nordlinger Ries crater following its creation 14 million years ago during the Miocene Epoch. The crater is around 24 kilometres across and formed following the impact of a 1.5-kilometre-wide meteorite. The lake that formed following the impact is thought to have been saline, and the resulting limestones provide numerous fossils from that era. The lake eventually drained, and the crater walls are much eroded. The crater is now mostly agricultural land surrounding the city of Nordlinger in Bavaria, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Nordlinger Ries impact crater" takes us back in time to the Miocene Epoch, around 14 million years ago. The image showcases the stunning lake that formed within the Nordlinger Ries impact crater after a colossal meteorite, measuring 1.5 kilometers wide, collided with Earth's surface. Located in Bavaria, Germany, this immense crater spans approximately 24 kilometers across. The lake that emerged as a result of this cataclysmic event was believed to have been saline, fostering an environment rich in life and preserving countless fossils from that era. Over time, however, the lake gradually drained away while leaving behind its legacy etched into the limestone formations surrounding it. Today, much of the once-mighty crater has succumbed to erosion and transformed into fertile agricultural land encircling the city of Nordlinger. This aerial view offers a unique perspective on how nature can reshape itself over millions of years. Detlev van Ravenswaay's remarkable illustration not only captures the historical significance and geological wonders hidden within this German landscape but also reminds us of our planet's enduring ability to recover from catastrophic events. It serves as a testament to both Earth's ancient past and its present beauty—a snapshot frozen in time for all curious minds to explore and appreciate.
