Monkeypox virus particles, TEM C016 / 7387
Monkeypox virus (MPV) particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Each particle is composed of a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) genome surrounded by a protein coat and lipid envelope. This virus, which is found near rainforests in Central and West Africa causes disease in humans and monkeys, although its natural hosts are rodents. It is capable of human to human transmission. In humans it causes fever, swollen glands and a rash of fluid-filled blisters. It is fatal in 10 per cent of cases. Magnification: x93, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres tall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Monkeypox virus particles, as captured through a coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Each particle is composed of a DNA genome enveloped by a protein coat and lipid envelope. While this virus is primarily found near rainforests in Central and West Africa, it has the ability to cause disease in both humans and monkeys, although its natural hosts are rodents. Alarmingly, it can also be transmitted from human to human. In humans, Monkeypox manifests as fever, swollen glands, and a rash of fluid-filled blisters. Tragically, approximately 10 percent of cases result in fatality. The magnification used for this print allows us to appreciate the intricate details at an astonishing x93,000 when printed at just 10 centimeters tall. The image serves as a reminder of the immense complexity that exists within our microscopic world. It highlights the biological pathogen responsible for an emerging infectious disease known for its zoonotic nature – capable of jumping between species with ease. As we delve into the realm of virology and microbiology through this photograph, we gain insight into the structure and characteristics of Monkeypox virus particles. This knowledge aids scientists in their ongoing efforts to understand and combat such exotic diseases caused by group 1 viruses like Monkeypox within the poxviridae family.
