Leaf of Ginkgo biloba

Ginkgo leaf. A leaf of the Chinese maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba. This two-lobed leaf is unique among trees in that it has no midrib and no network of veins; rather the venation consists of a constantly branching fan of veins from the base of the leaf. The leaves turn a golden yellow in autumn. This species of maidenhair tree is the only living representative of the ancient Ginkgoales (family: Ginkgoaceae). Ginkgo biloba has separate male and female plants. The tree is adaptable to almost any climate, and from China it was successfully introduced into Europe early in the 18th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Leaf of Ginkgo biloba, also known as the Ginkgo leaf. Originating from the Chinese maidenhair tree, this two-lobed leaf possesses a remarkable characteristic that sets it apart from other trees - it lacks both a midrib and a network of veins. Instead, its venation consists of an intricate fan-like pattern formed by constantly branching veins originating from the leaf's base. During autumn, these leaves undergo a breathtaking transformation, turning into a radiant golden yellow hue. Ginkgo biloba holds great significance as it is the sole living representative of the ancient Ginkgoales family (Ginkgoaceae). This gymnosperm species exhibits distinct sexual differentiation with separate male and female plants. Remarkably adaptable to diverse climates, this majestic tree has successfully thrived beyond its native China since being introduced to Europe in the early 18th century. Its resilience and unique characteristics have made it an object of fascination for botanists worldwide. Captured by Science Photo Library, this stunning image beautifully encapsulates nature's artistry within every delicate detail of this ginkgo leaf. It serves as a testament to the enduring beauty found in Earth's botanical wonders while reminding us of our planet's rich biodiversity and ancient lineage. Let this mesmerizing photograph transport you into nature's realm where science meets artistry in perfect harmony.
