Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
Benjamin Franklin, American scientist, inventor and statesman, shown here in his physics laboratory in Philadelphia. As well as his numerous scientific discoveries, Franklin was also one of the signatories of the US Declaration of Independence in 1776. As a scientist, he showed that lightning is electricity in a famous experi- ment in which he flew a kite carrying a metal key during a thunderstorm. This led to his invention of the lightning rod to protect buildings from lightning strikes. He also discovered the Gulf Stream ocean current, which carries warm water north to Europe. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind and multifaceted achievements of Benjamin Franklin, an iconic figure in American history. In this monochrome illustration, we are transported to his physics laboratory in Philadelphia, where he conducted groundbreaking experiments that revolutionized our understanding of science. Benjamin Franklin's contributions spanned a wide range of fields; he was not only a scientist but also an inventor and statesman. As one of the signatories of the US Declaration of Independence in 1776, Franklin played a pivotal role in shaping America's future. One of his most famous scientific discoveries involved proving that lightning is electricity. The daring experiment depicted here depicts him flying a kite with a metal key during a thunderstorm, leading to the invention of the lightning rod – an ingenious device designed to protect buildings from destructive lightning strikes. But Franklin's brilliance did not stop there. He also unraveled the mysteries surrounding ocean currents by discovering the Gulf Stream current, which carries warm water northward towards Europe. Additionally, he invented bifocal spectacles and even improved stoves for more efficient heating. This artful portrayal pays homage to Benjamin Franklin as both a visionary scientist and influential historical figure who left an indelible mark on society through his relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation.
