Grigori Rasputin, Russian mystic

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (1869-1916), Russian mystic. Rasputin, born in Siberia, was a wandering mystic and healer who rose to power in Imperial Russia by gaining the confidence of the royal family by acting as healer to their son. Legends arose about the malign influence he wielded, but Rasputin became involved in the political struggles between monarchist, anti-monarchist, revolutionary and other political forces, and, in 1916, he was assassinated in St Petersburg. Photographed in 1916, in Moscow, Russia. This photograph is from the Moscow State History Museum depository

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Grigori Rasputin, a Russian mystic who left an indelible mark on history. Born in Siberia and known for his mystical healing abilities, Rasputin gained the trust and confidence of the royal family in Imperial Russia by acting as a healer to their son. However, legends soon emerged about his alleged malevolent influence. As political tensions escalated between various factions in Russia, Rasputin found himself entangled in the power struggles. Tragically, this photograph was taken in 1916, just months before his assassination in St Petersburg. It serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent times that gripped Russia during this era. The monochrome image exudes an aura of mystery and intrigue surrounding this controversial figure. With piercing eyes and a commanding presence, Rasputin's portrait reveals both strength and vulnerability. Preserved within the Moscow State History Museum depository, it offers us a glimpse into one of history's most fascinating personalities. This print not only documents an important historical moment but also symbolizes the complex interplay between politics, royalty, spirituality, and human nature itself. Through its stark beauty and rich historical context, it invites us to reflect on the enduring legacy of Grigori Rasputin amidst the backdrop of early 20th-century Europe.
