Geometria by Rene Descartes, 1639 C015 / 5575

Geometria by Rene Descartes. This work, by the French philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes (1596-1650), was published in 1637 as an appendix to his earlier work Discourse on Method. Geometria introduced the now-famous Cartesian co-ordinate system, and proposed the key idea of reducing geometry to a form of algebra. This is the cover of the 1683 edition, published in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The title page shows a Latinized form of Descartes name, and mentions Florimond de Beaune (who wrote an introduction to this work), and Franciscus van Schooten (the Elder). Van Schootens son, also Franciscus, would later publish a 1649 commentary on Geometria

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the cover of "Geometria" by Rene Descartes, a renowned French philosopher and mathematician. Published in 1637 as an appendix to his earlier work "Discourse on Method" this groundbreaking piece introduced the revolutionary Cartesian co-ordinate system and proposed the idea of reducing geometry to algebraic form. The image depicts the title page of the 1683 edition, published in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Latinized form of Descartes' name is prominently displayed on the title page, along with references to Florimond de Beaune, who contributed an introduction to this work, and Franciscus van Schooten (the Elder). Interestingly, Van Schooten's son would later publish a commentary on "Geometria" in 1649. This historical artifact from the 17th century offers us a glimpse into Descartes' mathematical genius and his significant contributions to both philosophy and mathematics. It serves as a testament to his enduring legacy that continues to shape our understanding of geometry today. Captivatingly capturing this fusion of European history, writing, mathematics, and philosophy within its frame; this print invites viewers into a world where intellectual pursuits were celebrated with meticulous attention given even down to typography choices. A remarkable visual representation that pays homage not only to Descartes but also highlights key figures like De Beaune and Van Schooten who played vital roles in disseminating these profound ideas across generations.
