Fell mountain railway system, 1880s C017 / 6911
Fell mountain railway system. 19th-century artwork of a mountain railway based on the Fell system, developed in the 1860s by British railway engineer John Barraclough Fell (1815-1902). Unlike cog railways (which largely replaced this system), the third rail used for support while ascending an incline is smooth, rather than toothed. The trains passing up the incline use braking pads or wheels applied to this third rail to gain extra traction or to brake. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1880s, showcasing the remarkable Fell mountain railway system. Developed by British engineer John Barraclough Fell in the 1860s, this innovative transportation system revolutionized mountain railways of its time. Unlike cog railways that eventually replaced it, this system employed a smooth third rail for support while ascending inclines. The wood engraving depicted in this artwork beautifully captures the essence of this technological marvel. As we gaze at the image, we witness a train engine steadily climbing up an imposing mountain slope. The male driver skillfully maneuvers the locomotive, utilizing braking pads or wheels applied to the third rail for extra traction or to brake when needed. This illustration not only showcases advancements in engineering but also provides us with a glimpse into history and transportation during Britain's industrial era. It is fascinating to see how human ingenuity and technology converged to conquer nature's challenges. As we admire this piece of art, we are reminded of the significant role that railways played in shaping societies and connecting people across vast landscapes. This photograph serves as a testament to British innovation and highlights John Barraclough Fell's contribution to railway history. Overall, this monochrome masterpiece transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate both the beauty and functionality of an extraordinary feat of engineering - The Fell mountain railway system.
