Eye surgery

Eye surgery. Fish-eye lens view of surgeons operating in the Eye Microsurgery Institute, Moscow, in the then Soviet Union, in 1986. This conveyer-belt operating theatre was developed by the Soviet surgeon Professor Sviatoslav Fyodorov. He developed a reliable technique, known as radial keratotomy, for treating short-sightedness (myopia). Small incisions made in the cornea cause it to contract as it heals, bringing vision into focus. Operations in this linear conveyer operating theatre, in which patients were moved from surgeon to surgeon, could be completed in just over 15 minutes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a groundbreaking moment in the field of ophthalmology. Taken in 1986 at the Eye Microsurgery Institute in Moscow, then part of the Soviet Union, it showcases surgeons operating on patients using an innovative conveyer-belt operating theatre. Developed by esteemed Soviet surgeon Professor Sviatoslav Fyodorov, this unique setup allowed for efficient and rapid treatment of short-sightedness. The fish-eye lens view provides a fascinating perspective as doctors and scientists work meticulously to perform radial keratotomy surgeries. By making small incisions in the cornea, these skilled microsurgeons were able to stimulate contraction during healing, ultimately bringing vision into focus for their patients suffering from myopia. What sets this image apart is not only the pioneering technique being employed but also the assembly line operations within this linear conveyer operating theatre. Patients are seamlessly moved from one surgeon to another, ensuring that each procedure could be completed in just over 15 minutes. As we delve into this historical moment captured by Science Photo Library, we witness how advancements in medical technology have revolutionized eye surgery. The Eye Microsurgery Institute stands as a testament to human ingenuity and dedication towards improving vision care worldwide.
