EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Conrad Gessner, a renowned Swiss naturalist who made significant contributions to the field of biology during the 16th century. Gessner's dedication to presenting factual information about the animal kingdom, rather than relying on myths and legends, set him apart as a pioneer in his time. His comprehensive survey titled Historiae animalium remains an invaluable resource for scholars even today. In addition to his work on animals, Gessner also delved into the study of fossils and had plans to compile a survey of the plant kingdom before his untimely death from the plague in 1565. The Latin inscription beneath his portrait identifies him as Conradus Gesnerus, Medeus and Philosophus - highlighting not only his scientific pursuits but also his philosophical inclinations. Published as Plate 4 in volume 22 (1934) of Isis, which is recognized as the official publication of the History of Science Society, this artwork captures Gessner's likeness with remarkable detail. The ornamental border surrounding the image adds an elegant touch while emphasizing its historical significance. This monochrome illustration serves as a tribute to one of Switzerland's most influential naturalists and offers viewers a glimpse into both Gessner's life and the rich history of scientific exploration during Europe's Renaissance period.
