Framed Print of The Sambre-et-Meuse Regiment, c.1870 (print)
PCT7415615 The Sambre-et-Meuse Regiment, c.1870 (print) by Cartier, Patrice; Private Collection; (add.info.: Score of the song "Le Régiment de Sambre-et-Meuse" (Sambre and Meuse), a French patriotic song composed in 1870 by Robert Planquette and arranged as a military march by François-Joseph Rauski. The lyrics are by Paul Cezano, probable pseudonym of Guy de Binos, a Parnassian poet. Written after the French military defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, this march evokes in a martial tone the Sambre-et-Meuse army formed following the French victory of Fleurus in 1794 over the Austrians, in what is now Belgium. The region where the battle took place became the department of Sambre-et-Meuse, united with France from 1795 to 1814. It is the most played French military music after La Marseillaise and Le Chant du Départ, and is played every year during the 14 July parade.); © Patrice Cartier.
