In this electrifying photograph from the International Championship for Makes held at Oulton Park Circuit in the United Kingdom on May 1, 1965, we find ourselves at the chaotic and thrilling start of the Tourist Trophy race. The air is thick with the smell of burning rubber and the roar of powerful engines as six of the most renowned drivers of the era battle it out for position. At the center of the action, we see John Surtees in his Lola T70 Chevrolet, his tires spinning wildly as he attempts to gain traction and make a clean getaway. To his left, Bruce McLaren in the McLaren Elva Mk I Oldsmobile is determined not to let Surtees pull away, his own tires smoking as he fights for every inch of road. To the right, Jim Clark in the Lotus 30 Ford is making his way through the pack, his eyes focused intently on the drivers ahead. Behind him, David Hobbs in the Harold Young Ltd. Lola T70 Ford and Denny Hulme in the Sidney Taylor Racing Brabham BT8 Climax are also vying for position, their cars kicking up plumes of smoke as they dig deep for power. The scene is one of raw, unadulterated speed and determination, as these legendary drivers push their machines to the limit in a bid to come out on top. The start of the race is always a crucial moment, and in this image, we can see the intensity and focus of these six drivers as they set the tone for the rest of the race.
