Strayed, a Moonlight Pastoral, 1878 (oil on canvas)
BAL12447 Strayed, a Moonlight Pastoral, 1878 (oil on canvas) by Lawson, Cecil Gordon (1849-82); 67.3x59.6 cm; Charles Young Fine Paintings, London, UK; (add.info.: When this picture was shown at the RA in 1878, the critic of the The Times wrote:
[Lawson] has treated pathetically and poetically a suggestive subject - a lamb that has wandered from its ewe, in a dreary country where the blasted trees and the distant pit-chimneys tell of one of those regions of England in which Mammon has turned Nature out of doors. But even this desolation is made beautiful by the loveliness of moonlight. The contrast between that tender irradiation and the grimy ugliness which daylight would reveal, lends additional poetry and pathos to the picture.

Strayed, a Moonlight Pastoral, 1878
EDITORS COMMENTS
by Cecil Gordon Lawson captures the essence of poetic beauty amidst desolation. In this oil on canvas masterpiece, Lawson portrays a lamb that has wandered away from its ewe in a bleak and dreary English countryside. The landscape is marked by blasted trees and distant pit-chimneys, symbols of industrialization overpowering nature. Yet, it is under the enchanting moonlight that this desolate scene transforms into something ethereal. The tender irradiation contrasts with the grimy ugliness hidden during daylight hours, adding an extra layer of poetry and pathos to the painting. Lawson's skillful use of light creates mesmerizing reflections on the moonlit field as sheep gather in a flock nearby. The mood evoked by this nocturnal setting is both haunting and serene. The critic from The Times aptly described Lawson's treatment of this suggestive subject as both pathetic and poetic. Through his brushstrokes, he elevates ordinary elements such as lambs and landscapes into profound symbols of longing and displacement. This print invites viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between industry and nature in Victorian England while appreciating the timeless beauty found within even the most desolate corners of our world.
