EDITORS COMMENTS
In a daylight raid on 14th April 1942, a formation of RAF Boston bombers, escorted by fighters, unleashed their fury upon the power station at Mondeville in enemy-occupied Northern France. This strategic target belonged to the Societe Metallurgique de Normandie and served as a vital source of electricity for Caen and the Calvados Department. Additionally, it provided secondary power supply for the Cherbourg area. The accompanying print captures the sheer precision of the bombing campaign. The image reveals an array of factory buildings adjacent to the power station, including a large Steel works on the left side. These structures were relentlessly attacked during this mission, resulting in several visible hits. However, obscured by heavy bursts from aerial bombardment lies the main part of the power station on the right side. Despite being concealed from view in this photograph, it undoubtedly bore witness to extensive destruction caused by these brave RAF pilots. Taken amidst chaos and danger during World War II's second global conflict, these images serve as poignant reminders of both heroism and devastation. They encapsulate not only military might but also highlight Europe's turbulent past during this tumultuous era. This historic photograph is brought to you by Memory Lane Prints - preserving memories from our shared history.
