EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic presence of the Devonshire class armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire, a proud vessel of the British Royal Navy. Launched in September 1903, this formidable warship played a significant role during World War One and was even present at the historic Battle of Jutland. Tragically, her illustrious journey came to an abrupt end in June 1916 off the coast of Orkney. While en route to Russia, HMS Hampshire fell victim to a devastating mine laid by a German submarine. The sinking of this mighty ship carried immense consequences as it claimed the lives of many brave souls including one particularly notable figure - Field Marshal Lord Kitchener, Secretary of State for War. The solemnity surrounding this print is heightened by its historical significance. It serves as a poignant reminder not only of the valiant efforts made by those aboard HMS Hampshire but also pays tribute to all who sacrificed their lives during that tumultuous era. Preserved through time, this image from January 1913 transports us back into an era where cruisers like these were instrumental in shaping world events. As we gaze upon this relic from our past, let us remember and honor those who served on board HMS Hampshire and reflect upon their unwavering dedication to duty amidst times of great adversity.
