EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the remarkable collaboration between an East Cleveland juvenile jazz band and two talented trainees from Guisborough's Burtons clothing factory. Seamstresses Gillian Hird, 17, and Debbie Goodall, 16, have poured their skills into creating stunning uniforms for the Loftus Greenjackets Jazz Band. As part of a youth training scheme at Burtons, these young women have meticulously crafted 56 jackets and sashes that now adorn the members of the band. The dedication and hard work put forth by Gillian and Debbie are truly commendable. Their efforts were not in vain as yesterday marked a momentous occasion when they proudly handed over the newly tailored uniforms to the grateful band. The partnership between Burtons and the Loftus Greenjackets showcases how different sectors can come together to support one another. Barbara Jacobs, personnel officer at Burtons, highlighted that while her company provided labor assistance, it was ultimately the band who supplied materials for this project. This heartwarming display of teamwork demonstrates how communities can unite to uplift each other's endeavors. Captured in this photograph are Gillian Hird (17), Claire Boyes (12) from Loftus Greenjackets Jazz Band, Ruby Campbell - an event organizer for the band -, Lucy Autill - a training instructress at Burtons -, Melanie Smith (14) from the jazz band itself alongside Debbie Goodall (16). It is through such collaborations that dreams are realized and talents nurtured – a testament to youthful ambition on Teesside during March 1984.
