One of the biggest bonfires to be burnt is the huge 50 ft
One of the biggest bonfires to be burnt is the huge 50 ft. high pyre erected in to ground of the Aldersbrook Childrens Homes, Wanstead, London, E. This pyre takes a month to build and is the remnants of all the waste branches and rubbish that local firms and people wish to dispose of. These children, toddlers, and those up to the age of 15, watch this huge nobfire burn and are given a display of fireworks bought from donations and collections from well wishers. The toddlers are not told about Guy Fawkes because many of them are very upset when they see him burning. They are told it is a bag of straw. Before the bonfire is lit the children and nursesplay ring-a-roses round the base which is 50 yards round. November 1948 P029079

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of one of the largest bonfires ever to be burnt in London. Standing an impressive 50 feet high, this towering pyre was meticulously constructed over a month's time on the grounds of Aldersbrook Children's Homes in Wanstead, East London. The bonfire itself is composed entirely of waste branches and rubbish that local firms and individuals wished to dispose of, making it not only a spectacle but also an environmentally conscious endeavor. The children residing at the homes, ranging from toddlers to fifteen-year-olds, eagerly gather around to witness this magnificent display. To ensure the younger ones are not frightened by the effigy of Guy Fawkes burning atop the pyre, they are told it is merely a bag filled with straw. This thoughtful approach aims to shield them from unnecessary distress while still allowing them to partake in this cherished tradition. Before igniting the bonfire, both children and nurses join hands and play ring-a-roses around its massive base—a circle spanning an impressive 50 yards. This heartwarming ritual adds an element of joyous camaraderie among all those present. To further enhance their experience, donations and collections from well-wishers enable organizers to treat these young spectators with a dazzling fireworks display. It is through such acts of generosity that these children can create lasting memories during this festive season. This remarkable photograph transports us back to November 1948 when customs like these were deeply ingrained in society—reminding us how
