Soldiers wait by their Vickers Medium tanks, parked in Pont Street London

Soldiers wait by their Vickers Medium tanks, parked in Pont Street London, on the 10th day of the General Strike. The national dispute came about after negotiations between the miners and mine owners failed over wages and the strike began on 3 May 1926. Millions obeyed the strike call, bringing transport systems to a halt while newspapers were not printed. The government responding by using volunteers to run trains and buses and sent in troops to move supplies from the London docks. There were clashes between police and crowds in many areas and at least 4000 strikers were arrested. There were attacks on buses and trains, including the derailing of the Flying Scotsman. The strike was called off unilaterally by the TUC on 12 May with no guarantees of fair treatment for the miners who fought on to bitter defeat in October. 4th May 1926

Soldiers Stand Guard - A Glimpse into the Turmoil of the 1926 General Strike

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to Pont Street in London on the 10th day of the historic General Strike. Soldiers can be seen standing vigilantly beside their formidable Vickers Medium tanks, a stark reminder of the tense atmosphere that engulfed the city during this tumultuous time. The strike was ignited by failed negotiations between miners and mine owners over wages, leading millions to answer its call. As transportation systems ground to a halt and newspapers ceased publication, chaos ensued. In response, volunteers were enlisted to operate trains and buses while troops were deployed to ensure vital supplies reached London's docks. However, clashes between police and crowds erupted throughout various areas as tensions escalated. The unrest culminated in numerous arrests with at least 4,000 strikers being detained. Buses and trains became targets for attacks, including the infamous derailing of the iconic Flying Scotsman. Ultimately, despite valiant efforts by those involved in the strike movement, it was unilaterally called off by TUC on May 12th without securing fair treatment for miners who continued their fight until October when they faced bitter defeat. This poignant image serves as a reminder of an era marked by industrial disputes and societal upheaval—a testament to both resilience and sacrifice amidst a struggle for workers' rights.
