Tommy Walker - Chelsea Football Player Circa 1946. With the football

Tommy Walker - Chelsea Football Player Circa 1946.
With the football calendar was abandoned at the outbreak of the Second World War, Chelsea were reduced to playing regional competitions such as the games against Charlton and Millwall in the Football League War Cup. With most of the squad overseas fighting the war, guest players donned the blue shirt. One player to guest for Chelsea in 1944 and 1945 was Hearts star Tommy Walker, a well-respected and much loved Scottish international who was called - Footballs First Gentleman. His career in football was in the balance when he nearly became a minister for the Church of Scotland. He joined the army in 1938 as a sergeant in the Signals Regiment, went to India, but still managed to play the game, including turning out for the Armys - All Stars - Team. Chelsea were so impressed by his wartime appearances they paid Hearts £ 6, 000 for his services to play alongside Tommy Lawton. He returned to Hearts in 1948 as assistant manager

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Tommy Walker, a renowned Chelsea football player from the year 1946. During this time, the football calendar had been abandoned due to the outbreak of World War II. As a result, Chelsea was forced to participate in regional competitions such as matches against Charlton and Millwall in the Football League War Cup. With most of their squad serving overseas, guest players like Tommy Walker stepped up and proudly donned the blue shirt. Tommy Walker was an esteemed Scottish international who earned himself the title "Football's First Gentleman". His career took an interesting turn when he almost became a minister for the Church of Scotland. However, his passion for football prevailed. Even while serving as a sergeant in India with the Signals Regiment during his army days starting from 1938, he managed to continue playing the game he loved. Impressed by his exceptional performances during wartime appearances, Chelsea decided to acquire Walker's services by paying Hearts £6,000. He joined forces with another talented player named Tommy Lawton on Chelsea's team. After leaving Chelsea in 1948, Walker returned to Hearts as an assistant manager where he continued contributing significantly to Scottish football. This remarkable print captures not only a moment frozen in time but also tells us about one man's dedication and love for both his country and sport amidst challenging circumstances brought upon by war.
