Tottenham Hotspur Manager Bill Nicholson publicly pinned his faith in his players

Tottenham Hotspur Manager Bill Nicholson publicly pinned his faith in his players yesterday (Wednesday 11-12-63) - and privately stepped up the search for new strength. Inside a month he has lost both wing halves - the heart of a great side. Danny Blanchflower can no longer cope, and a specialists report on his knee injury will probably be the first step towards retirement. Now Dave Mackay will miss the rest of this seasons championship challenge after breaking his leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday (10-12-63) when playing against Manchester United in the European Cup Winners Cup. But Nicholsons answer is a firm: " We shall not panic. We shall not buy for the sake of buying. Mackays injury is a tremendous blow to us but its not the end of the world. My biggest headache for months has not been my team, but the constant and so far unsuccessful search to find players to back them up. A broken leg can t keep Dave Mackay down! He was in cheerful mood when Spurs team-mates Terry Dyson (left) and Bobby Smith called at his Enfield home. Daves children are Valerie, 4, and Derek, 6. December 1963 P026460

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the unwavering faith of Tottenham Hotspur Manager Bill Nicholson in his players. Despite facing a series of setbacks, with key players succumbing to injuries and retirement, Nicholson remains resolute in his belief that his team will prevail. The image captures a poignant moment as Nicholson publicly expresses his trust in his squad while privately intensifying the search for new talent to strengthen their ranks. The loss of both wing halves has undoubtedly dealt a blow to the team's core, particularly with Danny Blanchflower struggling to cope and facing potential retirement due to a knee injury. However, it is Dave Mackay's absence from the rest of the season's championship challenge after breaking his leg at Old Trafford that poses an immense challenge for Tottenham Hotspur. Yet, Nicholson refuses to succumb to panic or make impulsive purchases merely for the sake of it. His biggest concern lies not in managing his current team but rather in finding capable replacements who can support them effectively. Nevertheless, amidst these trials and tribulations, there is hope and resilience evident on Mackay's face as he warmly receives visits from teammates Terry Dyson and Bobby Smith at his Enfield home. This photograph serves as a testament to Mackay's indomitable spirit—a broken leg cannot keep him down—and symbolizes the determination that runs through every fiber of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club during this challenging period in December 1963.
