EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving depicts a Catalan volunteer during the Ten Years War (1868-1878), also known as the Great War or the War of 68, which marked the first of three liberation efforts by Cuba against Spanish rule. The volunteer wears a traditional Catalan barretina hat, a red sash, and carries a bayonet and gun. His determined expression and military attire reflect the intense commitment of the volunteers, many of whom came from Catalonia in the Mediterranean region, to the cause of Cuban independence. The Ten Years War began in 1868 when Cuban rebels, led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, launched a rebellion against Spanish rule. The conflict lasted for over a decade and saw the involvement of various foreign powers, including the United States, which provided support to the Cuban rebels. This engraving, published in The American and Spanish Illustration in 1872, offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the time and the way in which the media portrayed the Cuban struggle for independence. The image of the Catalan volunteer, with his distinctive hat and weapon, underscores the international dimension of the conflict and the role of volunteers from different parts of the world in the fight for Cuban freedom. The Ten Years War ultimately ended in 1878 with the signing of the Treaty of Zanjón, which granted Cuba limited autonomy but fell short of full independence. The struggle for Cuban independence continued, however, with the outbreak of the Little War in 1879 and the Cuban Revolution in 1953, which finally led to the establishment of the Cuban Republic in 1959.
