1891 Atlas Champignons Dufour Leon Mushroom Mycology Poisonous Sulphur Suspect Tricholoma

EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, taken from Leon Dufour's "Atlas des Champignons Comestibles et Veneneux" (1891), showcases two distinct mushroom species: Tricholoma rutilans and the poisonous Sulphur Tricholoma, or T. sulfureum. Dufour, a renowned mycologist of his time, meticulously documented various edible and toxic mushrooms in this comprehensive work. The Tricholoma rutilans, also known as the Brittle Bolete or the Red-staining Bolete, is a commonly found mushroom in Europe and North America. Its cap is initially conical, later becoming flat and reddish-brown, while its stem is white and fibrous. The mushroom derives its name from the red stains it leaves on wood when cut. Although not particularly sought after for culinary purposes, it is considered edible. The poisonous Sulphur Tricholoma, or T. sulfureum, is a potentially deadly look-alike. Its cap is initially yellowish-brown, turning bright yellow when bruised, while the stem is yellow and fibrous. The mushroom's cap has a wavy margin and a conical shape that becomes flatter with age. The Sulphur Tricholoma contains the toxin muscarine, which can cause symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal issues to paralysis and even death if ingested. This historical image serves as a reminder of the importance of proper mushroom identification and the potential risks associated with foraging for wild mushrooms. Dufour's "Atlas des Champignons Comestibles et Veneneux" remains an essential resource for mycologists and mushroom enthusiasts, providing valuable insights into the fascinating and complex world of fungi.
