Suffragette Cat and Mouse Act McKenna

Suffragette Cat and Mouse Act McKenna. Shows Reginald McKenna, Home Secretary in Asquiths government, sitting on a pedestal, labelled, Fiat Justitia (let justice be done). He introduced the Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for ill Health) Act, 1913 (which became) known as The Cat and Mouse Act. Intended to avoid forcible feeding by releasing weak prisoners who could recuperate after hunger striking, it did little to deter militant actions. A suffragette thumbs her nose at McKenna as he points to the Gaol Entrance, another leaves, smiling towards Swaggers Nursing Home. A paradise for frenzied females. Date: 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the defiant spirit of the British Suffragette movement during the early 1900s. The photograph depicts Reginald McKenna, Home Secretary in Asquith's government, seated on a pedestal, labeled "Fiat Justitia" (let justice be done). McKenna is best known for introducing the Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill Health) Act, 1913, also known as the Cat and Mouse Act. Intended to prevent forcible feeding of hunger-striking prisoners by releasing them when they became too weak, the act did little to deter militant suffragette actions. In this striking photograph, a suffragette boldly thumbs her nose at McKenna as he points towards the Gaol entrance. Another suffragette smiles towards Swagger's Nursing Home, a paradise for frenzied females, symbolizing their determination to continue their fight for women's rights and suffrage. The suffragettes' unwavering commitment to their cause is palpable, as they challenge the authority of the government and the status quo. This photograph, taken in 1913, is a testament to the courage and resilience of the suffragettes and their unyielding pursuit of women's suffrage. The image captures a pivotal moment in the history of the women's rights movement and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and struggles that led to the achievement of women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.
