1586 1617 Butler Cherubs Halo Lily Lima Mystic Oval Rosa

EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Rosa di Lima, also known as the 'Rose of Lima,' was born in Lima, Peru, in 1586, to a noble Portuguese family. From a young age, she was known for her deep piety and devotion to the Catholic faith. At the age of five, she began to experience mystical visions and was visited by angels and cherubs, who protected and guided her. This beautiful oval print depicts Saint Rosa di Lima in the prime of her mystical experiences. She is shown with a halo surrounding her head, symbolizing her sainthood, and holding a book, which represents her dedication to learning and prayer. A lily, the symbol of her purity, is placed at her feet. The cherubs, depicted at the top and bottom of the print, are a reminder of the divine presence that surrounded Rosa throughout her life. They are often seen as guardians and protectors of the saints, and their appearance in this print emphasizes the otherworldly nature of Rosa's experiences. Saint Rosa di Lima's life was marked by a deep spiritual connection to God, and she spent much of her time in prayer and penance. She was also known for her acts of charity and kindness towards the poor and sick. In 1617, at the age of 31, she passed away, leaving behind a legacy of holiness and devotion. This historical print, from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable woman and the mystical experiences that set her apart from her contemporaries. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the profound impact that one person can have on the world.
