EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the determined and focused gaze of Flight Lieutenant James Harry Ginger Lacey, DFM*, as he prepares for a mission during World War II. Born in 1917, Lacey joined the Royal Air Force in 1938 and saw active service in Europe, primarily as a bomber pilot. The decoration of a Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) on his chest attests to his bravery and skill in the face of adversity. The photograph shows Lacey standing next to a classic RAF transport aircraft, its propellers spinning in the background. The plane's insignia, the roundel and fin flash, are clearly visible, indicating that this was likely a Halifax or a Stirling bomber, both popular aircraft used during the war. The image exudes a sense of tension and anticipation, as Lacey readies himself for the dangerous journey ahead. Despite the challenges and dangers of the war, Lacey continued to serve with distinction. He flew numerous sorties, dropping supplies and personnel behind enemy lines, and was instrumental in the success of several covert operations. Tragically, Lacey was killed in action on March 13, 1945, during a mission over Germany. His sacrifice, along with the sacrifices of countless others, played a crucial role in the eventual Allied victory. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the men and women who served in the RAF during World War II. It is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their country and their comrades, and to the indomitable spirit that carried them through even the most harrowing of circumstances." *DFM stands for Distinguished Flying Medal, an award given for acts of valour during flight in the Royal Air Force.
