EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored etching, titled "Costume of a Bourgeois Man," showcases the elegant attire of the Directory period in France (1795-99), as depicted by the renowned artist Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr. The subject of the image dons an English hat, an old felt Tudor hat with its plumes removed, symbolizing the influence of British fashion trends during this time. The bourgeois man's perruque (wig) sits atop his head, adding a touch of sophistication and grandeur to his appearance. His redingote, a long coat with wide lapels, is a testament to the opulence and extravagance of the era. The small gilet (waistcoat) over a white shirt adds a layer of refinement and completes the upper part of his outfit. The high breeches, a common element of men's fashion during the Directory, are visible beneath the redingote, revealing the intricate details of the fabric and the man's well-tailored attire. This stunning etching, part of the "Costumes of the Directory" series, was created by Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr. from designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner. The meticulous handcoloring brings the image to life, adding vibrant hues and depth to the already intricate details. The etching, a beautiful representation of historical fashion, offers a glimpse into the opulent and intriguing world of the Directory period in French history.
