This engraving depicts a significant moment in French history, the proclamation of Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor for Life by the Three Consuls of the Republic on the 2nd of August, 1802. The scene is set in the Palace of Fontainebleau, with the Consuls, Paul Barras, Charles Maurice Talleyrand-Perigord, and Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès, seated around a table. In the foreground, Charles François de Montesquiou-Fezensac, Duke of Montesquiou and Minister of the Interior, presents the Constitutional Act to the Premier Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte. The act, drafted by the Consuls, granted Napoleon the title of Emperor and established a hereditary monarchy. The event marked the end of the Consulate and the beginning of the Napoleonic Empire. The engraving, created by Charles Francois Levachez after a painting by Jean Duplessi-Bertaux, captures the grandeur and solemnity of the occasion. The detailed rendering of the figures and their attire, as well as the intricate decorative elements in the background, highlight the opulence of the French court during the Napoleonic era.
