EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a United States Army Air Corps (USAAF) Boeing P-26 Peashooter in flight during the late 1930s. The P-26 Peashooter, manufactured by Boeing, was the first monoplane fighter adopted by the US military. With its sleek, modern design and advanced features, it quickly replaced the biplane fighters that had previously been in use. The P-26 was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1340-S3C3-G Wasp radial engine, capable of producing 625 horsepower. Its top speed was an impressive 227 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest fighters in the world at the time. The Peashooter was also the first US military fighter to be equipped with retractable landing gear, further enhancing its agility and performance. The USAAF ordered a total of 714 P-26s between 1934 and 1938, making it one of the most produced fighters in US military history up to that point. The Peashooter saw action in various theaters, including the Spanish Civil War and World War II. It was primarily used for training pilots and as a tactical fighter in the early stages of the war. This photograph captures the P-26 Peashooter in its element, soaring through the sky with grace and power. The image serves as a testament to the groundbreaking advancements in aviation technology during this era and the crucial role the USAAF played in shaping the future of military aviation.
