EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph transports us back to the Paris Exhibition of 1889, specifically to the Machinery Department's High Glass Roofed Hall. The Machinery Department was a significant part of the Exposition Universelle, an industrial showcase designed to display the latest technological advancements of the time. The hall, with its impressive low transverse arches, was the brainchild of engineer Henri de Dion (1828-1878). The buildings and statues in this photograph were not constructed from traditional materials but instead from staff, a low-cost, temporary building material invented in Paris in 1876. Staff was made from jute fiber, plaster of Paris, and cement, making it an economical choice for the Exposition's temporary structures. The High Glass Roofed Hall is a marvel of engineering, with its glass roof allowing ample natural light to illuminate the machinery exhibits below. The intricate machinery on display, a testament to the industrial prowess of the late 19th century, is a sight to behold. The low transverse arches of the hall create an open and spacious atmosphere, inviting visitors to explore the latest technological innovations. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the industrial world of 1889 Paris. The Paris Exhibition of 1889 was a significant event in the history of technology and engineering, and this photograph captures the essence of the Machinery Department's High Glass Roofed Hall, a symbol of innovation and progress during this period.
