EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisitely detailed hand-colored illustration from the 19th century, a noblewoman is depicted in the midst of a spirited game of jeu de paume, or real tennis, in the 14th century. The illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, is taken from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1861. The noblewoman wears an elegant urban, a type of headdress popular during the late Middle Ages, adorned with delicate lace and veiling. Her outfit consists of a simar cassock, a long, flowing garment commonly worn by women during this period. The cassock is fastened at the waist with a wide belt and features long, flowing sleeves. The scene takes place in a grand, indoor tennis court, as evidenced by the high ceiling and large windows that allow natural light to filter in. The noblewoman holds a racket in her right hand and a tennis ball in her left, poised to make a powerful strike against the opposing player, who is not visible in the image. Jeu de paume, or "game of the palm," was a popular sport among the European nobility during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. It was played indoors, often in grand halls or castles, and required a great deal of skill, agility, and athleticism. The game involved hitting a ball back and forth over a low net with rackets, and the objective was to score points by making the ball land on the opponent's side of the court. This stunning illustration offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of elegance, refinement, and athletic pursuits. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of tennis and the important role it played in the lives of the European nobility during the Middle Ages.
