EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration from the 1932 publication "Prehistoric Life" by Wilhelm Bolsche, we witness the skeletal remains of an extinct Kentrosaurus aethiopicus, a formidable dinosaur that once roamed the Earth during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 155 to 150 million years ago. Originally discovered in what is now Ethiopia, Africa, this dinosaur is estimated to have reached lengths of up to 9 meters (30 feet) and weighed around 2.5 to 3.5 tons. Kentrosaurus aethiopicus is recognized by its distinctive features, including its elongated, S-shaped neck frill, which may have served as a protective shield against predators. Its name translates to "spiked lizard from Ethiopia," a fitting moniker given its armored back, which was adorned with rows of small, triangular plates and spikes. This giant predator likely lived in semi-arid environments and was an agile, bipedal herbivore, feeding on vegetation using its small, sharp teeth. However, its appearance and defensive adaptations suggest it may have been capable of defending itself against potential threats. As we gaze upon this illustration, we are transported back in time to a world long past, where dinosaurs ruled the land and the seas. The marine creatures and other prehistoric life forms depicted in the background further emphasize the rich diversity of life that existed during the Mesozoic Era. This image is a testament to the wonders of zoology and paleontology, offering us a glimpse into the prehistory of our planet.
