EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcoloured etching by Thomas Fisher, the revered Saxon saints Modwena and Edmund the King are depicted in their respective roles, with the allegorical scenes of their lives unfolding in the intricately carved niches on the side of the nave. Saxon Saint Modwena, portrayed in the left niche, is shown in the attire of an abbess, her serene expression reflecting her deep spiritual devotion. Modwena, also known as Mildgytha or Mildrith, was the daughter of King Penda of Mercia and is believed to have founded the monastery at Evesham. She is often depicted with a book and a key, symbols of her learning and her role as a spiritual guide. In the right niche, Saint Edmund the King is depicted in regal attire, crowned and holding a palm branch and a martyr's palm, symbolizing his martyrdom. Edmund was the King of East Anglia in the late 9th century and is known for his unwavering faith and bravery in the face of adversity. He was famously martyred by the Danes, who reportedly shot him with arrows and then beheaded him. The intricate carvings in the niches depict scenes from the legends and histories of these two saints. Modwena's niche shows her founding the monastery at Evesham, while Edmund's niche depicts his martyrdom. The etching captures the rich history and spiritual significance of these Saxon saints, as well as the intricate craftsmanship of the chapel where these paintings were originally found. This beautiful handcoloured etching by Thomas Fisher is a testament to the enduring legacy of these Saxon saints and the artistic mastery of the past. It invites us to reflect on the stories of Modwena and Edmund, and to appreciate the beauty and depth of the artistic traditions of the past.
