EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, from Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" published in Florence in 1843, depicts two of the most prominent figures in Middle Eastern history: Saladin, the first Sultan of Egypt, and Selim I, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Saladin, whose full name was Al-Nasir Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, is renowned for his military and political prowess, which allowed him to unify various Muslim states and drive the Crusaders out of the Holy Land in the late 12th century. He is also known for his piety and justice, earning him the respect of both Muslims and Christians. In this image, Saladin is depicted wearing a flowing robe and turban, adorned with intricate gold and gemstone patterns, reflecting his status as a powerful ruler. On the other hand, Selim I, also known as Selim the Grim, ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1512 to 1520. He is famous for his military conquests, which expanded the Ottoman Empire to its greatest territorial extent. Selim is depicted in this engraving wearing a red and gold robe, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and a fur-trimmed cloak, symbolizing his wealth and power. The engraving also includes inscriptions in both Arabic and Latin, highlighting the anthropological interest in the customs and manners of different races, tribes, and nations during the 19th century. The image serves as a testament to the rich cultural history of the Middle East and the enduring influence of its leaders on world history.
