EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Sago Palm, Metroxylon sagu (previously known as Metroxylon rumphii), a remarkable plant native to the Pacific Islands and parts of Northern Australia. The Sago Palm is not a true palm, but rather a cycad, which is a group of plants more closely related to conifers than palms. This botanical illustration, taken from Dr. Willibald Artus' Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants published in Jena, Germany, in 1876, showcases the plant's intricate structure in exquisite detail. The Sago Palm is renowned for its edible starch, which is extracted from the pith of the plant's trunk. The starch, known as sago, was a staple food source for many Pacific Island communities before the introduction of European crops. The Sago Palm's versatility extends beyond its culinary uses, as its fibers were also used for weaving mats, baskets, and other crafts. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and utility of the natural world, and serves as a reminder of the rich botanical knowledge that was being documented during the 19th century.
