EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts three exquisite Russula mushrooms: the Geranium-scented Russula (R. fellea), the Stinking Russula (R. foetens), and the Brittlegill Russula (R. geranioides, now known as R. fellea). This beautiful illustration is from Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and expertly rendered in chromolithograph by Lassus. The Geranium-scented Russula, also known as the Geranium-scented Brittlegill, is a small, delicate mushroom with a distinctive pinkish-brown cap and white gills. Its most notable feature is its sweet, geranium-like fragrance, which makes it a delight to discover in the forest. The Stinking Russula, or Stinking Brittlegill, is another small, pinkish-brown mushroom, but its scent is far from pleasant. It emits a strong, unpleasant odor when bruised or cut, which is said to resemble the smell of putrefying meat. Despite its unappealing aroma, it is a valuable addition to the mycological world due to its unique characteristics. The Brittlegill Russula, now known as the Geranium-scented Russula, is a small, pinkish-brown mushroom with brittle gills that easily break off when handled. Its cap is covered in fine, white hairs, and it has a mild, almost imperceptible fragrance. This beautiful and intricate illustration is a testament to the detailed and meticulous work that went into mycological research and documentation during the early 20th century. It serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the fungi kingdom and the importance of preserving and studying these fascinating organisms.
