EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases two of Europe's most majestic deer species: the Red Deer, Cervus elaphus, and the Fallow Deer, Dama dama. The Red Deer, also known as the European Red Deer or Wapiti, is the largest deer species in Europe. The majestic stag in the foreground is adorned with a magnificent set of antlers, which are shed and regrown annually. The doe, or female deer, is smaller and more agile, with a reddish-brown coat and distinctive white spots on her sides. The Fallow Deer, on the other hand, is smaller than the Red Deer and is easily distinguished by its distinctive coat, which is speckled with white spots and has a dark brown stripe down its side. The stag in the background is also shown with impressive antlers, which are more slender than those of the Red Deer. Brodtmann's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate textures and patterns of the deer's coats, as well as the lifelike expressions on their faces. The naturalistic setting, with its lush foliage and dappled sunlight, further enhances the sense of realism and beauty in this exquisite work of zoological art. Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals was a groundbreaking publication that aimed to document the natural world in all its complexity and diversity. Brodtmann's lithographs, which were produced using a labor-intensive process that involved drawing on limestone plates with a greasy crayon and then printing the image using water and ink, were a key component of this ambitious project. Today, they remain valuable not only as works of art but also as important records of the natural history of Europe in the early 19th century.
