EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking chromolithograph, titled "Portraits of the Family of King George III," is a beautiful and intricately detailed depiction of the royal family during the late 18th century. The portraits feature King George III (1738-1820) surrounded by his ten children: Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850); Caroline, Princess of Wales (1768-1821); Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1765-1827); Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn (1771-1800); Prince Augustus, Duke of Sussex (1773-1843); Princess Charlotte, Princess Royal and later Queen Consort of Portugal (1796-1817); Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (1767-1820); Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (1743-1805); Prince George, Prince Regent (1762-1830); and Prince Octavius, later Duke of Brunswick and Lunenberg (1779-1806). The portraits were produced by W. Griggs from Frederick Rathbone's "Old Wedgwood," a collection of decorative or artistic ceramic works produced by Josiah Wedgwood. The vivid colors and intricate details of the chromolithograph are a testament to the advanced printing techniques of the late 19th century. King George III, who ruled from 1760 to 1820, was a significant monarch in British history. His reign saw the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. The portraits offer a glimpse into the lives of the royal family during this tumultuous period in history. The portraits are arranged in a circular design, with King George III at the center, surrounded by his children. The use of color and shading effectively conveys the individuality and personality of each family member. The intricate details of their clothing and accessories provide insight into the fashion and style of the time. Overall, this chromolithograph is a fascinating and visually stunning representation of the royal family of King George III.
